Degree and qualification types in Australian universities/ed sector

For those of us looking for an authoritative list of degree and other educational qualification types in Australia there is The Australian Qualifications Framework Implementation Handbook (from the AQF site). See the handbook for detailed descriptions of the following and for any questions arising out of the following list which is taken from that handbook.

For best practice — uniformity and comprehensiveness of degree and qualification types across the Australian sector and confidence in the widespread recognition and “authority” of those names — I propose adopting the following list:

In the Higher Education Sector

Doctoral Degree

  • research doctorate (* ADT type)
  • professional doctorate
  • higher doctorate (* ADT type)

Masters Degree

  • coursework masters
  • research masters (* ADT type)
  • professional (coursework) masters

Graduate Diploma

Graduate Certificate

Bachelor Degree

  • there is a range of bachelor degree programs — see the handbook, page 50 these include:
    • 3 year degree program
    • professional degree
    • combined degree
    • graduate entry degree
    • Bachelor Honours degree (* use only this one as type of Bachelor Degree)

Advanced Diploma

  • vocational education and training sector (* ignore this “subdivision”?)
  • higher education sector (* ignore this “subdivision”?)

Diploma

  • vocational education and training sector (* ignore this “subdivision”?)
  • higher education sector (* ignore this “subdivision”?)

Vocational Education and Training Sector
